Howard Jenkins was born in 1952 in Tampa, Florida and is the heir to the Publix Super Markets fortune. His father, George Jenkins, founded the company in 1930 in Winter Haven, Florida and it is now the largest employee-owned company in the United States. Jenkins worked his way up from a bag boy to equipment buyer and vice president of research before becoming chairman and CEO in 1990. He led the expansion of the company into other southern states and spent 11 years at the helm of Publix.
